It is 7:25 a.m. on the first of July in 1916 and Lieutenant James Besley is standing inside a British trench that is located eight kilometres north of the River Somme.

At 7:30 a.m. the officers blow their whistles and Lieutenant Besley leads his men over the top and across a transfigured landscape of churned black mud that is dissected by coils of barbed wire and surrounded by the heaving terraces of some terrible arena. What follows is a phantasmagorical journey through the smouldering ruins of Lieutenant Besleys mind as he travels across France in the hope of returning to England and his wife and children.

He is accompanied on this journey by a chaplain who has been sent to assist him and together they travel by train, by paddlewheel steamer, by horse-drawn ambulance and by ghost ship. Along the way they will encounter disfigured malcontents from Lieutenant Besleys id, pan-dimensional provocateurs, time-travellers, poltergeists, doppelgangers, golems and ghosts. But is Lieutenant Besley himself alive or dead?
